Archontophoenix cunninghamiana






Botanical Name: Archontophoenix cunninghamiana
Common name: Bangalow palm, King palm, Illawara palm, piccabben, piccabeen
Family: Arecaceae (Palmae)
Type: Broad leaved, evergreen  Palm tree
Origin: Rain forest eastern Australia 
Leaf Character: Feathery leaves on mature trees 8-10 Ft. long. Green above gray green beneath. Old leaves shed cleanly leaving smooth green trunks.
Flower: Clustered amethyst/ violet flowers 
Period: It flowers in midsummer
Fruit: the red fruits are attractive to birds
Exposure: Full Sun or Part Shade, Bright indirect light 
Water: Moderate to regular water
Remarks: Grows in frost-free areas.  It can grow up to 50 ft or taller  with 10-15ft spread. Where winds are strong plant them in lee of buildings to prevent damage. Young trees can't take frost, mature plants stand 28oF  They tolerate shade and can grow under tall trees.
Propagation: By seed

Pest: Spider mites and leaf spots in juveniles  root rot 
Cultivars: A. Alexandrae Alexandra palm. Trunk enlarged towards base. A. cunninghamiana (Seaforthia elegans) King Palm.
